Raleigh Classic Car Auction

Preliminary reports show about 360 cars crossed the block during the Auctions America Raleigh Classic Car Auction, held June 22-23 at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. The annual event has been advertised on the front page of OCW for several years running with supervision from Bob Lafater of Zebulon, N.C., who stated first-day auction sell-through ran 67 percent. Lafater said he was expecting $4.2 million in sales and remained optimistic that post-auction sales will put the final tally close to that figure.

I’m quite sure that another reason for the popularity of the Raleigh Classic is the man behind the auction – Mike Leith.  With an impressively long string of automotive dealerships in North Carolina, his reputation as a successful businessman is widely known.  Less known and arguably more interesting is Mike’s vast knowledge of, and love for, great old cars.  In 27+ years of  working in the automotive world, I’ve met many people who were highly successful, financially.  I’ve known a number of folks with vast, old car know-how, and lots who really enjoy driving their rides.   I’ve never seen anyone who combined all these traits to the degree that Mike has – and humbly, without a whiff of the arrogance that so often accompanies success.  This is a Car Guy’s Car Guy, and a true gentleman, and the value he adds to the auctions he runs cannot be overstated.

All vehicles that sold during the Raleigh Classic Auction were priced beneath the six-figure mark, but many No. 1 and No. 2 condition prewar classic cars went home well bought. Also, a passel of postwar “starter” collector cars went to first-time buyers in the $10,000 range.

Auctions are of interest to old car buffs for many reasons.  For one thing, they provide information.  These snapshots of car values are all pieces of the puzzle, when you’re trying to figure out what a vehicle is worth.  They can also provide a diversion.  Barrett-Jackson’s well known January auction is probably the most notable example of this.  For those of us in the Snowbelt states, shivering our way through another winter, it’s a way to escape to the desert’s warmth for a brief break (if only mentally), before we head back to our bunkers to wait for spring.   On their highest profile, Friday and Saturday night auctions, it’s also entertainment – and sometimes, unreality TV.  Some of the prices on those nights typically slip the grasp of gravity, and float off to heights not explained by logic.

Although we offered livestreaming on YouTube at this past summer’s auction, we will not be doing so in December. That means you’ll have to be there in person to experience this winter’s event, and after all, there’s no HD resolution better than seeing something live.
